November 22 - Alicante, Spain

This was our first view of Alicante, which is located on the gorgeous Costa Blanca of Spain. The scene is dominated by the Citadel of Santa Barbara which sits at the very top of Mount Benacantil. The earliest foundations of this impressive fortress date from around 230 BC! Our plan was to take the lift up to the top and be able to show you some killer panoramic views.... but, alas! It won't be happening! Apparently, they're busy installing a new lift.... and it won't be completed for another 8 months! So, like us, you'll just have to imagine those panoramic views!

Oh well.... strolling this magnificent palm-lined promenade isn't such a bad alternative!

Yep.... right up there is where we would have been!

We explored the colorful winding streets of the Barrio de Santa Cruz which is the name for Alicante's old quarter. (What's with this affinity we have for narrow twisting streets?? It's a good thing we're not claustrophobic!)

We thought this was rather a funky fountain to find in a square in the old quarter! (But I'll bet it's well-populated on hot summer days!)

A little something to remind us of home.... and our "fleet" of Swedish automobiles. (We wonder if we'll still remember how to drive when we get home! And on which side of the road??)

We saved the best for last!! One last chance for authentic spanish paella at a charming restaurant right out on the docks! I think this little fellow just went out and scooped these fish right out of the sea.... that's how fresh the food was! (Not quite as good as that baklava in Kusadasi.... but almost!!)
