November 18 - Kusadasi, Turkey

Kusadasi is a lively place where quaint alleys and white washed stone houses rise in tiers behind the market district to the remains of the medieval walls. The name Kusadasi comes from kus, a bird, and ada, an island. We love the reflection of Queen Elizabeth in the windows of the terminal....

....and the real thing, too!!

Well....it was bound to happen, sad to say....we've become rebellious Americans and decided we don't want to "queue up" and get on another tour bus!! So we're going to explore Kusadasi on our own!

Can you figure out which one of these colorful characters is not a real Turk???

We decided to just chill out for a while at this waterside Starbucks. Raspberry muffin.... 4 liras, large latte.... 7 liras, free WiFi.... priceless!! (Can you find Chuck in this photo?)

Kusadasi is filled with a riot of local colour, and no place more so than in the Bazaar.

!!!!!

Benny has his own methods for luring customers into his shop!

It's not just the people that are colorful!

This is an old caravansarai from the 16th century. These served as roadside inns where travelers could safely rest from their day's journey. It was usually a building with a walled exterior and an interior courtyard that was open to the sky. It had a single entrance that was large enough to allow travelers and their heavily laden beasts such as camels to enter. These caravansarais proliferated along the trade routes covering Asia, North Africa, and South Eastern Europe, especially along the Silk Road. Appropriately, this one is now a hotel.

We wouldn't be in Turkey if we didn't include the requisite photo of a mosque.

Chuck felt he got much more bang for his buck here than on the ship!

In all the hubbub, we were still able to find charming off-the-beaten-track scenes like this one.

Queen Elizabeth shared the harbor with lots of Turkish fishing boats.

Before getting back on the ship, we bought some baklava to-die-for at one of these little shops. Yummmmmmmmm!! Our only regret from our day in Kusadasi?? That we didn't buy more baklava!!

The moon over Kusadasi as we departed.
