April 3rd - Salalah, Oman....Mohammed Goes to the Mountain....

…. and he took us with him. Yes… our guide Mohammed took us up into the desert terrain in the mountains above Salalah in Oman. We saw Job’s tomb and the frankincense trees, which are the big draws here. But the highlight was the baby camel we saw being walked along the road with its mother. It was only one week old and soooooooo cute! I’ll bet you think that these “ships of the desert” store water in their humps so that they can survive in the dry desert heat. WRONG! According to a pamphlet we read here, the camel actually stores most of its water in its hooves! Who knew!! (The hump is just filled with fatty tissue.) We were kind of disappointed to have missed the camel races that were held at 7:00 this morning. Although we experienced enough drama when a camel came barreling up a pathway onto the road right in the path of the car behind us! Fortunately, they were able to avoid a camel through the windshield by swerving off the road. We were very watchful for dromedaries after that! Mohammed also took us to a souq, or marketplace, where Chuck was able to accomplish his objective in Oman…. the purchase of a “khanjar”, or traditional Omani dagger. (I wonder if I should be worried???)

We are now headed for the Red Sea and Safaga, Egypt. The Captain told us tonight that the ship is now at a heightened level of security. We’ve seen some kind of warship in the vicinity and there are high pressure hoses uncoiled on the decks near the Long Range Acoustic Devices. Maybe Chuck will find a use for his khanjar!!

Watch out for camels!!
