April 19th - Lisbon

Once again....the weather gods smiled on us. Once again.... we happened upon the very best guide in the entire city, Carlos by name. And once again.... we experienced a perfect once-upon-a-time fairy tale day from start to finish! Ahhhh Lisbon.... we can't wait to come back! Carlos showed us some of the high points of Lisbon. (Literally.... Lisbon is built on seven hills!) We were enthralled by the narrow winding cobblestone streets and the sun-washed colors of the old buildings. Lisbon is often compared to San Francisco and we could definitely see why with its steep hills and vistas out over the ocean. (Lisbon was also devastated by a huge earthquake back in 1755.) Carlos then took us to the picturesque town of Sintra, about 20 miles northwest of Lisbon. We LOVED it here!! We were absolutely enchanted by the Palacio da Pena which dominates the town from its perch on top of a mountain surrounded by lush forests....

We wished we could spend more time here, but our fantasy had yet to be completed by a seafood lunch on the beach. It was superb....and so fresh that we could have sworn that the fish swam right up and leapt onto our plates! Yummmmm!
