Glimpses of Guernsey

The town of St Peter Port sprawled out in front of us as we got off the ferry. How quaint is this....even in the rain!

The view out our hotel window....it's like being in a little country cottage.

We thought we could take a little time off from eating while we are out here in the islands....after all, how fattening can "potato peel pie" be?? But the French influence here is alive and well.... we can't walk more than about 50 ft without passing by a fragrant boulangerie or patisserie. So.... no dieting here!!

Uh-oh! Did we take a wrong turn and end up on Easter Island?? We ran into this "fellow" on a remote little pathway while exploring the gardens behind the Pandora Hotel.

The tide here is a whopping 33 feet! This is what it looks like at low tide!

The Guernsey Yacht Club welcomed us with open arms....

....and so did the Cock and Bull Pub. (As if Chuck needs any more cock and bull stories!)

Our hotel offered a three hour tour around the island. We stopped at this beautiful military graveyard which included rows of graves of German soldiers from the Occupation.

We visited the RAF Museum.....I'm such a pushover for a man in uniform!

But this one....not so much!

Castle Cornet, built in 1204, stands at the entrance to the port. This cannon has been shot off at noon sharp for the last 200 years. Sort of a "Changing of the Guard".... Guernsey style!

Yikes!! Almost got wet feet taking this one!! This is the lighthouse at the entrance to St Peter Port harbour.

The Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans from 1940-45. During that time, the Germans built a maze of underground tunnels. This one now houses a military museum that contains many poignant artifacts from that period of time.....

On a happier note, the gardens here are exquisite and are all still in bloom!

We thought we would miss all that leaf peeping at home. But the view out of our window here is of an intriguing old stone wall covered in New England colors! So we needn't be homesick!

We'll miss the roof lines of St Peter Port.
